Copa Airlines Pet Policy: Which Documents Are Required for a Pet Reservation?

Small pets like cats and dogs can fly on the plane with Copa Airlines. Larger pets have to go as air cargo. Copa Airlines does not allow pets to be checked as luggage, and there is a holiday ban from the middle to the end of December.

Under certain situations, trained service animals and mental support animals can travel free in the cabin with their owners.

Copa Airlines In-Cabin Pet Policy

Copa Airlines’ policy for pets traveling in the cabin is that they must be in pet cages that the airline allows and have a waterproof bottom and sufficient space and airflow for the pet.

  • Pets are welcome. Only small dogs and cats are allowed in the Main Cabin (not Business Class).
  • Bookings for pets. Must be made at least 48 hours before leaving.
  • Pet Weight. The total weight of the pet and its cage can’t be more than 20lb/9kg.
  • Pet Age. A pet must be at least 8 weeks old to travel in the cabin.
  • Forms Required:
    • On foreign trips, a health certificate from a qualified doctor and any other paperwork that the country you’re going to needs.
    • As many countries have different rules, you should always check the rules for the country you’re going to before you go.
    • On trips within Colombia, you only need current proof of vaccination. On trips within Panama, you need a health clearance and guarantee that your vaccinations are up to date.
  • Check-in
    • You have to pay the fees and check in at the traveler’s counter.

  • Pet Fee:
    • USD 125 for foreign flights, but it depends on the area.
    • Domestic trips within Panama and Colombia cost $25 plus taxes.
    • Plus, there are fees for connecting trips.
  • Restrictions:
    • Route Restrictions. Pets can only fly on foreign planes from Monday through Friday. On domestic flights (within Panama), pets can travel every day if there is no foreign link.
    • Restrictions on the cabin. In Business Class, pets are not allowed.
    • Maximum pets per box. Per person, only one pet cage with one pet inside is allowed.
    • There are limits on seats. People who are going with pets can’t sit in the first row, by an emergency exit, or against a wall.

      • There can’t be more than three pets in the main cabin at a time.
      • Children younger than 11 are not allowed to fly with pets.
      • Pets can only be fed if they stay in their cages.
      • During the trip, the pet must stay inside its case.
      • The pet can’t have a bad smell or act in a bad way.
      • On paths that include a connection with another airline or interline parts, pets will not be allowed.

  • Must be big enough for the pet to turn around, lie down, and stand in a normal pose.
  • The pet carrier must have enough ventilation, but no part of the pet’s body should stick out of the carrier.
  • The pet cage must be waterproof.
  • Must be made of plastic, metal, or wood, and the sides can be soft or hard.
  • Must be strong enough to keep the animal from getting out.
  • Must have safety latches that make it possible to open and close the door without tools.
  • Must be able to hold the waste that is made in flight.
  • Have to fit easily under the front seat.

Air Cargo Pet Policy

Copa Mascotas lets cats and dogs that are too big or heavy to fit in the passenger area travel as goods. The air cargo service is offered on foreign trips from Monday to Thursday. Pets must be between 2 months and 11 years old to fly as cargo.

  • Allowed pets: On both local and foreign planes, only cats and dogs can be shipped as cargo.

Pet Restrictions:

  • Banned Breeds: The following dog types are not allowed as flying cargo through Copa Cargo: Brazilian Fila, Cane Corso, Argentina Dogo, Canary Catch Dog, English Bulldog, American Staffordshire Terrier, and Pit Bull.
  • The following dog breeds need bigger crates and shouldn’t travel when it’s hot: Lhasa Apso, Dogue de Bordeaux, Carlino Mastiff, Yorkshire Terrier, Shih Tzu, Sharpei, Chow Chow, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Bichon Principal, Maltese, Staffordshire Terrier, Japanese Pug, Pequines, Japanese Chin, French Bulldog, English Toy Spaniel, Holand Pug, Bull Terrier, Griffon de Brussels, Boxer, and Boston Terrier.
  • Limits on the temperature. If the temperature in any of the cities on your route is higher than 85°F, your pet might not be allowed to fly.

Travel with Service Dog

Copa Airlines’ pet policy says that a service dog is an animal that has been instructed to help a person with a condition, such as by guiding a blind person or warning the owner of a possible seizure or high/low blood sugar.

  • Each person can only bring one support dog.
  • Must be old enough and taught enough to follow instructions from the owner.
  • Following Documents Req:
    • Documentation that proves the dog is a service animal.
    • Health certificate and proof of vaccinations.
    • Valid documents for the country of destination:
      • People traveling from or to the United States must fill out the DOT Service Animal Transportation Form and bring two copies to the airport.
      • Passengers going to or from other places must fill out and bring two copies of the Form for Transportation of Service and Emotional Support Dogs to the airport on the day of departure.

Emotional Support Dogs

Copa Airlines’ pet policy says that an emotional support animal is a dog that has been taught to help a person feel better by giving them comfort, decreasing their worry, sadness, or stress, or making them feel calm.

  • Only trips to or from Canada, Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico accept emotional support dogs.
  • Only one emotional support dog is allowed per person.
  • On a trip, only two emotional support dogs are allowed.
  • At least six months must have passed since the dog was born.
