24-Hour Cancellation Policy

You can cancel your Air New Zealand long-haul international flight, including flights to or from the United States, within 24 hours.

According to the policy, if you buy a long-haul international flight ticket at least 7 days before your trip, you can cancel it within 24 hours of buying it. This applies to all types of tickets.

Long-haul international flights refer to all international flights, excluding flights between New Zealand, South Pacific Islands, Australia, Bali, and Honolulu, Bali.

Air New Zealand Refund Calculation

The amount of your refund will be based on how much of your ticket you haven’t used and the type of ticket you bought.

  • If you haven’t used your ticket and the rules allow for a refund, you will get back the amount you paid for it.
  • If you have used part of your ticket, your refund will be the higher of these two amounts:
  • The cost of the ticket from the point where the interruption occurred to the final destination.
  • The difference is the amount you paid for the ticket minus the value of the ticket you have already used.

Note: Air New Zealand Minor Policy Says that They charged some charges fees for unaccompanied minor services. These fees are for the extra support and supervision that the airline provides.

In both cases, the amount of the return will include flight fees and taxes, less any cancellation fees.

How Will Air New Zealand Give Me Back My Money?

If you should be getting a refund:

  • You will receive a refund in the same currency and method that you used to pay for your ticket. If you used your Airpoints Dollars to buy your ticket, you will receive a refund in Airpoints Dollars. The refund will have the same expiry date as the original Airpoints Dollars.
  • Even if your ticket is non-refundable, the refund amount will still include any unpaid taxes and third-party charges that the airline has not yet paid. You cannot receive a refund for tickets that are paid for using credit.
  • If your flight is canceled, fails to operate, or you miss a connection because of things like bad weather, epidemics/pandemics, strikes, acts of terrorism, medical emergencies, government/regional/local authority restrictions, changes in laws, etc., Air New Zealand will give you a travel credit instead of a refund. The travel credit will be available for the part of your ticket that you didn’t use. It will be valid for 12 months starting from the date your ticket was originally issued unless the airline decides to extend this period in specific situations. The airline may subtract a service fee from your payment to cover their administrative expenses.
  • You can get a refund for your ticket as long as you apply before it expires.

Exceptions for Refund

  • You showed your ticket to the airline or government official as evidence that you plan to leave the country. However, there is a possibility that the airline might allow you to board the flight if they are convinced that you have received permission to stay in the country or if you are leaving the country by another means of transportation.
  • You were not allowed to get on the plane because of your behavior, and you may have to pay some fees.
  • If your flight was canceled, re-routed, or rescheduled because of your medical emergency, the refund you receive will be used to cover the expenses caused by the changes to your flight.

How to Apply for a Refund?

Either the airline that gave you your ticket or your travel agent will process your refund.

  • If you bought your ticket directly from Air New Zealand using their website, mobile app, call center, or ticket office, you can ask for a refund by going to the Manage My Booking section on their website or by sending an email to refunds@airnz.co.nz.
